When Lord John Balliol of Barnard Castle in County Durham died in 1268, his grieving widow, Lady Dervorgilla of Galloway, had his heart embalmed and put into an ivory casket. Five years later, Dervorgilla founded Sweetheart Abbey - Dulce cor - the last Cistercian abbey to be established in Scotland. She was buried there on her death in 1289, with her husband's heart beside her. |
